1824 First-Hand Hookah in Calcutta,India :¬† See full size image(okay, I made a review on this book in which their is a large chapter on hookah smoking by the Rich Sultans and in every day India society as well–see link above)

I do take credit for “finding” this original art print some years back in a portfolio of Occidental Middle-East art motif`s, and it naturally gets its way onto many other online hookah¬† blogs and sites!! Why not,¬† half the fun of smoking a hookah are the shisha tobacco¬† “PipeDreams”.

A cigar smoker might imagine himself as a suave businessMAN jet-setting accross the globe, a Briar Pipe smoker is either Hugh Hefner in his hea, or Grampa tamping down his wad while watching the Thanksgivingday Parade on TV.

We hookah smokers are Sultans,Sheiks,Nomads of the desert.¬† (For me that’s not hard, as my Israeli village is in very close view of 5 Arab villages in on the other hills accross from us, and we hear the delightful call to prayers by the Muze’en 5 times a day. (Reminds us to pray our 3 times—though from a very young age I was educated to love the prayers and we didn’t have Minnarets nearby. Its just more exotic¬† atmosphere!¬† Maybe like a Little League baseball player imagining that he’s Derek Jeter stepping up to the plate.¬† Does Derek Jeter own a hookah? Anyone know?¬† He went to the same High School that my American cousins did in Michigan . Well my cousins had to finish school and Derek Jeter’s parents are both educators, besides, no High School team, no college team no minor league, no MLB.I even send him my cast offs :

with his schedule playing everyday for 10 months, who has time to find the best? But Derek decided he’s just “one of the boys” at heart and has a new realtionship with this guy here, some soccer-football player from¬† out in Europe. Anyone know who he is and if he smokes hookah? (Okay, I’ve seen David Beckham play quite a lot only jiving).Should someone buy a pink bat for Derek?Alex Rodriguez is “smart” either he has something to catch or pass on besides a baseball, or he’s worried that David has (he won’t touch him without his gloves).

As the famous country song goes “No one knows what goes on behind closed doors”.

How do these people make their social schedule? Between movies, photo shoots for the magazines, TV talk-shows, writing volumn 4 of their biographies, visiting their families, mom & pop, little sis& bro, signing photos or baseballs? I know the baseball players do lots of time visiting in hospitals from bed to bed, doing fund raising dinners.¬†¬† So how does Jessica Beil get a date for¬† tonights¬† red-carpet¬† “Walking-the Dog”?¬† Simple. She calls her Social Subscription Hotline, where they pay $32,000 a month to get set up with Mr.Right. “Hello, this is number #426. I’m in the mood for a sportsman tonight, no, no NFL Football players, how about hockey or baseball, I would prefer he’s white, but if you get Derek Jeter than 50% Caucasian is fine….”

My biggest worry is running out of charcoal or shisha for the hookah.

Proof that “Hookah smokers are totally cool under pressure”

¬†¬†Don’t kiss the ones with the veils or you are dead- they are all men .¬†¬† You’d wear a turban and veil if you were out in the blazing sun at the center of the equator, and the blue color is¬† to ward off against¬† “the evil eye”.

Berber Women

¬†Before you ask yourself¬†¬†¬† “Why has this chump of a hookah blogger added the film scene to watch?”¬†¬†¬† let me assure you, as a hookah smoker you are in for a treat!¬†¬† I don’t want to give anything away.

¬†¬†¬†¬† This scene is un-typical to the rest of the film, which centers on the Berber Sahara Desert nomads and their struggle against European and later American Empirealism, and¬† while Sean Connery in his earlier days dominates all the other film’s scenes, here he is only a small part. (Watch the rest if you want, its terrific).

But as a HOOKAH smoker, get a pipe ready and watch this, you  will be in for the shock  of your life!

(Do I dare give away enough to persuade you to watch?)     The  hookah portion is in the last 4th of the clip, but if you miss the beginning of this scene 8, you will miss my whole point which is  :

“Hookah smokers are cool under pressure”

¬†I would suggest seeing all of this 1975 film which is done in very good taste, is exciting all through.¬† Don’t let the fact that it was done 35 years ago throw you. Technically its great, the photography is superband the story fascinating.¬†¬† A good chance to see the Berber Nomad’s side of the story.

From :¬†¬† “The Wind & the Lion”¬† starring Sean Connery

¬†¬†¬†¬† This film besides being historic and¬† scenic¬† shows the nobility of the Berber nomads who¬† are the main tribesmen in the Sahara.¬† When you think “Desert Nomads”¬† think Berber.¬† They are not classified as Arab, but are Muslim , though they¬† fought quite hard against Islam in the beginning.

From info by the downloader to YouTube  :

¬†“In 1904, Morocco is the source of conflict by the powers of Imperial Germany, France, and the British Empire, all of whom are trying to establish a sphere of influence in that country.

Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli (Sean Connery) is the leader of a band of Berber insurrectionists     opposed to Sultan Abdelaziz and his uncle,     the Bashaw of Tangier, whom Raisuli sees as corrupt and beholden to the Europeans.

¬†He kidnaps Eden Perdicaris(Candice Bergen) and her children, William (Simon Harrison) and Jennifer (Polly Gottesman) from their home, after murdering Sir Joshua Smith, a British friend of Eden’s.

Raisuli then issues an outrageous ransom,     deliberately attempting to provoke an international incident in order to embarrass the Sultan and trigger civil war.

Back in the United States, President Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Keith) is struggling for re-election, and decides to seize the kidnapping as both a political tool (coining the phrase “Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!”) and as an effort to flex America’s military muscle as a new power – despite the protests of his cautious Secretary of State, John Hay (John Huston).

The American Consul to Tangier, Samuel Gummere (Geoffrey Lewis), is unable to negotiate a peaceful return of the hostages, so Roosevelt sends the South Atlantic Squadron, under the command of Admiral French Ensor Chadwick (Roy Jenson), to Tangier, either to retrieve Perdicaris themselves or to force the Sultan to give in to Raisuli’s demands.

Over the course of time, however, Roosevelt finds himself gaining more and more respect for Raisuli, thinking of him as an honorable man who just happens to be his enemy.

An amazing music video by the Finnish heavy metal-classical musicians who are all long haired and blonde dressed as Tuareg Berber nomads playing cellos in the desert with the gorgeous Linda Sunblad singing and a mystic ending fits well here.

I’m smoking the new “Unit 2.0” modern hookah

As I write, I’m smoking the new ultra-modern “Unit 2.0″¬† hookah from Austria.

Its a 19 inch high juniour size hookah that assembled out of the carton in a minute.

Pieces :

one large size bowl flat on the bottom v shaped; glass made in Germany.  The aluminum shaft and its base fit perfectly into  the already built in 4 waffered rubber  grommets, its an air tight fit.

The aluminum shaft is a cinch to clean, it has 11 circular air vents which dissipate heat. There is a hollow portion at the top of the shaft for shisha with lots of room ,  then add your foil.

Generally on all my hookahs I use one and a half or two coals, and still I need a few puffs to get the smoke going.  I was suprised on the first puff with only one coal covered by the added on thick aluminum wind cover 4 inches high to get a gigantic cloud of smoke!

And the taste of the shisha comes out very strong  and true.
