100% True Hookah Story

There is a book¬† I read in 1968 that is written in the first person , a man telling his story as it is happening “now”.

He is captured by aliens and taken to their planet where he is put in a large guilded cage . He finds there a woman, and the aliens want them to procreate the human species for them.

The story is told, but¬† the teller goes on tangents from time to time .Literally .Here he¬†lives ¬†in 1966 on the foreign ¬†planet, and all of a sudden he is a¬† combat pilot¬† of the American Air Force in ¬†World War 2.¬† He calls this “going back and forth in time”.

At age 17 when I read the book, the concept of a person going back AND forth in time over and over again was a strange phenomenon.

Today at age 54, I do that time traveling very often myself with no actual desire or effort on my part.

I could be here in the room writing, and all of a sudden a scene from 45,  and easily 50 years ago will flash up for a split second, but tell a whole story.  Actually yesterday I flashed back to age 4 when my older cousin from South Bend ,Indiana came to visit and  we were watching the large boxed tiny screen t.v. which was available then.

Thats one big reason why¬† children do NOT want to hear your stories about “what Daddy did in the war” since the past is a strange concept to them.Their past might be only 10-15 years.

For my self born  only 8  years after the end of WW2 I realize that it was of my own time, and of the people around me, but growing up I thought it was 5o years away.

Now I can tell this story which often comes back to me, and has come back quite often of my first

 H O O K A H experience and resulted in deadly concequences.

In 1970 I went to the souk (shuk) which is Arabic for “market place”.

I went as a 17 year old to smoke something OTHER  than  shisha which was quite lawful then to smoke.

¬†Take “shisha” and put an “H” in front, you’ll¬† know¬† what it was. and quite cheap then. Maybe the big influx of tourists which came a few years after raised the prices from¬† half a dollar for a finger sized nice brown Lebanese made to¬† $10¬† soon after.

It later became illegal when the western countries preasured the Middle Eastern big cities¬† in order to keep their own ¬†citizens from buying and sending it home, or in their luggage. There were no dogs at New York’s airport then to sniff out hashish, maybe herion .

I went to a small side street of the market into a residential area, up the steps not far at all where there was a nice Tea House. I came in, sat down on one of the 3 benches on each side of the walls facing the large entrence opening and was served  a clear glass cup of very heavily sugured tea.

Across from me sat a tall boy¬† around my age. There was also an elder who wore a kaffiyeh (not seen as much today)¬† and an American tourist¬† with longish hair. Within about 5 minutes¬† the same one who gave us the tea brought in a very tall narghileh¬† with a steel stem and¬† clear glass water bowl. In the tobacco bowl he placed about 4¬† broken pieces of hashish¬† each around¬† 10 grams or so since we were only¬† 4 people. On top of¬† that he placed burning natural coals. My eyes popped at the ammount. “There goes my throat” I thought to myself, since I had been smoking since age 15, but in small pipes which made the smoke¬† terribly harsh. The coals were placed on the top, no foil.

The elder¬† with the kaffiyeh headress¬† was passed the long hose and he smoked. I can’t remember after that who came next, but when I took a strong pull on the hose I barely tasted the¬† smoke flavour. As I let the smoke out it kept¬† comming out¬† more, and more and still no stop to it. I knew¬† that the effect could not be immediate, there was my first time smoking a hookah. That was the water effect of the hookah.

We kept passing the hose around. The older man left first walking well on his legs. Soon the man who¬† served us came in , looked around and asked the American tourist to go. He could barely move! About a short time after that the tourist rushed in again yelling “Where is my Frisbee? Where is my frisbee?”

That was “East meets West”! 2 cultures colliding. The man dragged him out again. Only in America!

We we then left the tall guy and myself,  in no rush to leave and no one was going to toss us out, we even recieved more tea.

As we got to talking he asked me how old I was. I said “Soon 18”.

“So we’re both up for the army draft, huh?” he asked. Yes I told him. He¬† and I left, both going our own way (and neither of us bothered to check under the bench for any left frisbee).

After 8 months of basic training we were going to advanced training ¬†.I met him again. Our ¬†unit was¬† like the American Marines as compared to the regular American army¬† infantry and he was going from¬† there to a very “special” unit¬† .¬† I had seen¬† before when we first met that ¬†the guy was something different top notch.

To shorten the story, that was 1971 .It has been  many years  and he was killed  making an attack  on a fort along with 14 other soldiers  on a very high hill in  1973 by snipers. I  was with a larger unit on the other side of that hill and later finished  my time in 1974.

By the way, the only thing I smoke in the hookah is tobacco.

Hookah Today and High-Tech online

You know you have a problem.
Sitting at the home of a friend, he’s almost finished preparing the hookah set up. Clay bowl is full, foil and holes made, now you are taking your first puff, your second …..
(“WHAT flavour is this I’m smoking”?, you ask yourself).
So you make out a mental check list.”Do I have a cold, a stuffed nose?” (no). “Maybe this is Zagloul shisha from Nakhla, the non-flavoured only tobacco and glycerine flavour without honey-(mu’assel ) and flavourings added? ” you imagine?
“So Abu James, enough with the suprises already. WHAT flavour did you put on?”
“You mean you can’t tell?” answers James.
“Not really”.
“Well, this is the cherry flavour of “TEEZ AL-KALB” brand company ” says your host.
(I will tell you about their shisha at the end of the post…..)

So what is the whole problem anyways? Not all of hookah is just smoking and enjoying your session only. The set up of the hookah, keeping it clean, in good working shape, ordering new appliances, shisha tobacco learning more and more about hookah, its history, tips on smoking what to do or not are so very important to the pleasure of the hookah experience.
Isn’t it strange that in this very hi-tech age we live in the best made hookahs ever are comming out all the time. You have only to go online to see thousands of hookahs in all sizes, shapes and brands with designs never made before but so available to us all.
.From China in the last few years has come a lot of technically well made hokahs with no air gaps, better made parts and gaskets that fit perfectly or screw-on types of never before made waterpipes. Even these are sold well in the Middle-Eastern countries.
India makers of narghile like “UnivacGroup” manufacture beautiful lines of hookahs.
Take a look at the many thousands of different designed water bowls. Some with smoked colored glass and filigree steel added on patterns that are burnished to a real silver-like touch of class.
Who could buy these but the very rich who asked special articians of the time to make them by hand? Now you may get them online.
With the online advent of hookah, the competion between companies and brands is huge, so more types of hookahs for every pocket and means are available. What price you decide to pay for your investment is the main concern.
What kind of aestethics for the hookah? Buy a bowl with glass, or cut glass? Of acrylic material or quartz? Of gold colored steel or real gold.
Notice there are from every company the “Premium” hookahs, “Premium ” tobacco etc.
With better science the coals from Europe, China, America, India and Japan etc have given us the “quick-lighting” coals, better tasting, less bad taste or none at all.Hopefully less dangerous is one of their aims and a class of charcoal company competition.
The different brands of shisha tobacco are huge. In the “olden times” for sure there were home made shishas to be bought in any market place, with the best brands sold to the Pashas,Kings,Princes of each realm along with richer people.
Today ,really only the price you are willing to pay and the brand you choose is up to you.
Going on the internet, you can find the most exotic brands of shisha if you want to pay the price from India,Arab countries, and in the last few years from America utilizing the cultured Virginia tobaccos from the 1600’s.
All the shisha tobacco brand companies are using chemistry to make the same basic mix for sheesha which is glycerine, honey, tobacco and flavourings. In the recent past each company has added many new not -before available flavours making them from trial and error with the “right” ammount of flavourings to give it the great taste, but not to overpower your senses.
So here we are with that “Problem” you have at the home of Abu James. You still haven’t figured out if this cherry flavoured sheesha of the “TEEZ AL-KALB” company tobacco brand is just a “weak sister” or if the charcoals are stale and killed the taste.
Maybe Abu James hasn’t cleaned his hookah well, or at all, or the water has been in too long and effects the taste.
If you really want to know, you must go to someone from the Arab countries to ask. It can’t be ANY Arab.
If you go to an Arab who does not order sheesha online or doesn’t smoke and say
“What is Al-Amir” brand? He will ask you “In accordance with WHAT?” “Amir” can be “His Highness” or “Prince” etc.

Can you tell me what” Saet-Safa brand ” means? He or she will think you are on drugs!
SAET means “an hour with”
SAFA can be a girl’s name, or the name of an order of religious Moslem sect as are the “Bretheren of Purity” from Iraqi origin. SAFA means PURITY so it means “An Hour with Purity”.
Nice name for a brand of shisha. Nice name for an opium den in Shainghai,China of the British colonial Mandate times.
The girl’s name in America similar to Arabic name SAFA (Pure)is “Chastity”.
Don’t go to her house an ask her father “Can I have an hour with Chastity”. He will maul you like a grizzly bear!
So be careful, you want to find out the name of this brand of shisha smoke, ask only an Arab speaker with a good sense of humour!
Now I am going into my stash of quicly dwindling sheesha to pull out some SAET-SAFA and have “an Hour of Pleasure”.

Hookah Table 4 Safe Smoking

We talked about some safe smoking tips, like putting aluminum foil under the whole hookah area, not pulling too hard on the hose (bad, bad), making a non-tip base for your hookah….. or did we?
Actually, it was mentioned, but not as a special post not yet.
Of course, you might like to invest in this great simple colored plastic bowl-base.Non slippng and a perfect fit , there are small, and large sizes custom made
http://www.smoking-hookah.com/Store/Hookah-Accessories.asp
its at the bottom of he page “hookah protector”

. To make your own base for a non-tip hookah” tip” simply take a sturdy carton and draw around the bottom of your base, cut. You can have as high a box as you want, but 3 inches might be fine, or make of plywood, paint ,design and cut.
Mine sits on the 3 tiered glass table I have with a electric light on top . I had the table already. The 3 tiers are step sized. Small tier on top, second tier step bigger and the 3rd even wider with a brass metal magazine holder that happened to be a few m”m wider than my hookah base! Just dumb luck. I got it free from my sister who dumped it on me to try saving space in her house.
Try going to “Salvation Army” and “Goodwill” stores, buy a cheap table, cut a hole custom for your bowl size and nail some wood underneath to sink it 3 inches below the level of the table.

Pssst! Did you see that MINI ?

Now this is going to be strange:
I’ve smoked almost only large sized hookahs, and have a medium sized, made my own once, but NEVER smoked a MINI sized hookah.
Hey you out there in cyberspace!
Who’s smoked a mini, who has bought ?
Can see from here the great possibilities of a mini. It comes with its own protective carrying case IF you buy online on the web.
It is great for the beach, won’t tip over in the sand. (Which a large one will , even buried well in the sand for support.
They are easy to clean and care for, cheap to buy, good quality material made by the best manufacturers from India, China Syria, Egypt.
But how well they taste and preform, can’t enlighten you.
I used to take my medium sized to a local graveyard to relax (Only 3 times-I AM weird but not yet crazy!). The medium and mylarge tasted the same.
Lets hear your opinion here in the comments.
